The Reading Wall

For a long time now, I have wanted the kids to be able to have access to all their books so that they can read them whenever they want instead of high on a shelf for only us to be able to read to them. The only thing holding me back from this doing this a long time ago was Megan and still is Megan.  She doesn't know how to take care of books at all and though she does sit down and look through them at times, she is mostly just really tough on them.  We have lost several books to her already. :(  But for Tyler's sake, and after he got a new recliner for Christmas, I had to go ahead and put them out for him.  So during nap time one day, I did just that.  When they got up, Tyler especially was immediately drawn to them and it was almost like he had never seen the books before.  He honestly has "played" more with books than anything else since I put them down to his reach.  I just love watching him "read" and know that it is good for him.  Guess I just gotta keep the crack down on Megan and continue to try to teach her how to take care of books!

Megan does get her chance in the recliner every now and then. :)

Maybe don't put ALL the books there for them to reach? We had some we let Andrew have access to whenever he wanted and others that were kept up higher (more expensive books for example) that way he could "read" on his own but I wasn't real upset if they got broken. It also gave us some books to "practice" good book habits on and not use EVERY book we had to practice with.

I do like the idea of a reading nook though . . . very creative

We have the same problem with Emma and it is frustrating because her favorite books are ripped to shreds. I did what your sister suggested and put the books I didn't want her to demolish in a closed cabinet in her reading area and left all of the board books within her reach...

Maybe you could put Tyler's "paper" books on top of the bookshelf where he can reach them and she can't?

Hopefully Megan, and Emma!, will soon learn to treat them better... :)

Unfortunately, she can reach all the top shelves too. But, there are some books that I have actually put on the bottom shelf that they both seem to leave alone. If they discover that they are there, I will rescue them and put them away somewhere higher. But for now, this seems to be working. Tyler absolutely loves being able to read his books and spends the majority of his play time there. Megan is getting better. She is still just so clumsy!
